FAQ
What inverters are available to be repowered with the Sunny Boy Smart Energy (SBSE)?

What considerations should I think about if adding or replacing PV modules?
Pay attention to the open circuit voltage (Voc) and short circuit current (Isc) limitations of the inverter.
Will adding PV capacity require you to bring the system up to code?
We recommend you reach out to your local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
Will I need to rewire my solar array?
Not necessarily. This should be reviewed by an SMA Applications Engineer. If possible, please have your as-built diagram available. It’s also important to assess the existing DC string design. In many cases, the SBSE’s 30A Isc limit (per MPPT) is sufficient to handle existing string configuration.
What is short circuit current (Isc)? How is it calculated?
The module Isc is provided by the PV module manufacturer. Keep in mind that connecting strings in parallel will increase Isc.
What is a transformerless inverter? How can I tell the difference?
A transformerless inverter is an inverter that does not include an isolation transformer.

Should I be concerned about PID (Potential Induced Degradation)?
Most modern PV modules are not susceptible to PID. However, it’s best to consult the module manufacturer, as older modules tend to be more vulnerable. Additionally, switching from a transformer-based to a transformerless inverter may accelerate degradation.
The recommended SBSE inverter is smaller than my old inverter. Will I lose energy production?
Not necessarily. The existing system is likely no longer producing at its nameplate capacity due to natural degradation of the PV modules over time.
Can I use my existing monitoring?
This will depend on the type of existing monitoring system you have (SMA or third-party, RS485 or Speedwire). However, the SBSE features integrated system monitoring, which we recommend for optimal performance and ease of use.
