FAQ
How long does a typical repowering project take?
The timeline for a repowering project varies based on site-specific factors, including the condition of existing equipment (modules, wiring, BOS, etc.), the number of inverters being replaced and whether new permits are required. While some projects can be completed in a matter of weeks, more complex upgrades may take longer. A thorough site assessment will provide a clearer estimate for your specific system.
Are there cost benefits to repowering compared to a full system replacement?
The cost-effectiveness of repowering versus a full system replacement depends on system size and the condition of existing equipment. If the array and inverters show significant wear or damage, a complete replacement may be the better financial choice. However, if the array and BOS components are in good condition, replacing only the inverters can be a more cost-effective solution. A thorough site inspection by qualified PV professionals is essential before making this decision.
What documents are required for me to submit a repowering request?
For Commercial & Industrial (C&I) or Large-Scale repowering opportunities, please provide an as-built diagram of the existing system, and data sheets for modules and inverters as applicable. This allows our team to assess the current installation, recommend the best inverter replacements, and minimize rework for a smoother transition.
Is it worth modernizing the system?
This has to be decided on an individual basis. In any case, after repowering, you benefit from the latest technology of the installed inverter and the restart of the 10-year SMA factory warranty. One way to calculate profitability is to compare the current efficiency with the theoretical future efficiency.
What is short circuit current (Isc)? How is it calculated?
The module Isc is provided by the PV module manufacturer. Keep in mind that connecting strings in parallel will increase Isc.
Can I use my existing monitoring?
This will depend on the type of existing monitoring system you have (SMA or third-party, RS485 or Speedwire). However, the Sunny Tripower X features integrated system monitoring with systems that have up to five inverters, or systems that are larger can use the SMA Data Manager M, which we recommend for optimal performance and ease of use.
Should I be concerned about PID (Potential Induced Degradation)?
Most modern PV modules are not susceptible to PID. However, it’s best to consult the module manufacturer, as older modules tend to be more vulnerable. Additionally, switching from a transformer-based to a transformerless inverter may accelerate degradation.
What considerations should I think about if adding or replacing PV modules?
Pay attention to the open circuit voltage (Voc) and short circuit current (Isc) limitations of the inverter.
Will adding PV capacity require you to bring the system up to code?
SMA recommends you reach out to your local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
What are the benefits of using SMA inverters for repowering?
SMA inverters offer advanced grid management features, comprehensive monitoring capabilities and flexible design options that work with many existing PV systems. Each inverter comes with warranty coverage and technical support to help maintain long-term system performance.
Can repowering improve the overall performance of my PV system?
Yes. Repowering can significantly enhance the overall performance of any PV system, maximize energy production, improve reliability and extend the lifespan of your investment.
What are the potential challenges of repowering a PV plant?
Several technical and logistical challenges may arise during a repowering project:
Limited access to original system documentation can make it difficult to assess the existing design and plan upgrades effectively.
Physical infrastructure may have experienced wear or degradation over time, requiring additional repairs or replacements.
Technical compatibility issues can also emerge, particularly when existing array voltage configurations or grounding systems don't align with modern inverter technology requirements.
How can I ensure my repowered system meets current safety and code requirements?
Contact your local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) to make sure your repowered system meets current safety and code requirements.
How does repowering affect the warranty of my PV system?
The warranty impact varies by component. For solar modules, please consult your module manufacturer for their specific warranty terms regarding repowering. Any new SMA inverters installed during repowering come with the SMA Limited Factory Warranty. This warranty can be extended up to 25 years (depending on model) to provide long-term peace of mind for your investment.
Can I add energy storage to my repowered PV system?
Yes, but this will depend on local building codes. Your local AHJ would have the most applicable information on energy storage in PV systems.
Does SMA also convert large-scale systems?
Yes. Due to their complexity, these plants must be planned intensively.
